Excellent "old-school" laserjet printer churns out crisp pages like none other
By A. Bush
I received one of these printers several years ago as a gift. Until then, I had been stuck with a horrific dot-matrix printer that not only printed out grainy, faint characters onto irritating paper with tear-off guides, but sounded like a flock of angry seagulls while doing it.

With that as my previous reference, you might expect my review to be a bit biased due to the fact that ANY printer would be better, but I have also used many other printers, ranging from inkjets to photo printers to professional copiers, so I have a good idea of what's out there. This printer is EXCELLENT.

Yes, it only prints black and white, but for documents, reports, essays, schoolwork, graphs, or reference photos that don't need color, this printer is superb. It is reasonably compact and was able to fit nicely on my desk at college along with my computer setup, serving me faithfully through all my classes.

The thing that is most impressive about this printer is how FAST it prints. Obviously, large, professional copy machines can spew out paper much quicker, but they are also huge and costly. I don't know the actual PPM of this machine, but I know that it was faster than any other printer on my dorm floor at school, and makes inkjet printers seem archaic.

Laserjet printers produce much cleaner, crisper text than inkjets can, and this is no exception. Furthermore, the paper comes out dry and ready to be stacked or bound, not damp like some inkjets. Pictures print just as fast as text, and come out with similar clarity. The darkest black is very opaque.

Another issue with any electronic device is reliability, and HP has nailed it. This printer only jams on the rarest of occassions, and its flip-down front makes removing stuck paper easy. In addition, its laser cartridge, while expensive to replace, lasts an unbelievably long time. I have printed out thousands of pages of text and photos, and am still on my FIRST cartridge. Sometimes, when printing photos, I get bands of darker and lighter value, which may be a sign of an aging cartridge, but in general it has printed excellently for its lifetime.

In addition, most modern computers have the drivers for this printer stored in the cache, so it's essentially plug-and-play, needing no startup disc under most circumstances.

My one complaint is that the cable has only a parallel port connection rather than USB, but it may be possible to get a short converter cable that would enable USB use.

Overall, I am very pleased with this printer and will continue to use it until I can't buy new cartridges.

Perfect Laser Printer, it's a great work horse
By John V.
Perfect Laser Printer, it's a great work horse. I own 3 HP LaserJet 1100 because of its quality.
But if after 10000pages it starts to jam paper -its Very easy to fix: buy two parts Arm and rubber drum cost ~$10, open printer and replace it, thats all, 10 min job. It will print perfect again NO Jam anymore.
Recomended!

HP LaserJet 1100
By Deby A. Daly
This is the third of this model that I've owned over the years. As a black/white printer, it's a great work horse. Very dependable, does a great job, can always be counted on to finish the task at hand.
